2026 BYD Atto 1

Dolphin Surf.

Since the 2026 model year is forward-looking, much of the information is based on early reviews, international specs, and announcements for its launch in markets like Australia and New Zealand.

Here is a review summary based on the available information:

Key Highlights & Market Positioning

  • Affordability: The Atto 1 is heavily anticipated to become Australia's cheapest EV, with estimated starting prices around $25,000 (before on-road costs) in that market, making it a strong competitor against budget petrol cars like the Toyota Yaris or Suzuki Swift.

  • Size: It is a compact city car (around 3,990mm long, 1,720mm wide), built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0.

  • Seating: It is typically configured as a four-seater, although some specifications mention five seats.

Powertrain and Performance (Varies by Trim)

The Atto 1 is generally offered in at least two main variants: Essential (or Dynamic) and Premium.

FeatureEssential/Dynamic TrimPremium Trim
Battery Capacity (LFP Blade)$\approx 30 \text{ kWh}$$\approx 43.2 \text{ kWh}$
WLTP Range$\approx 220 \text{ km}$$\approx 310 \text{ km}$
Max Power$65 \text{ kW}$$115 \text{ kW}$
Max Torque$175 \text{ Nm}$$220 \text{ Nm}$
0-100 km/h Acceleration$\approx 11.1 \text{ seconds}$$\approx 9.1 \text{ seconds}$
DC Fast Charging (Peak)Up to $65 \text{ kW}$Up to $85 \text{ kW}$
AC Charging (Onboard)Up to $11 \text{ kW}$Up to $11 \text{ kW}$
Driving Feel: Early impressions suggest the instant torque makes it feel peppier than similarly sized petrol cars, with decent dynamics due to the low center of gravity. Highway stability is solid, though wind and road noise are noted at higher speeds.

Interior and Technology

  • Design: The interior is described as tidy and purposeful with minimum frills, featuring the same "wavy lines" design language seen in the BYD Dolphin, though with potentially smaller screens and less soft-touch material given the lower price point.

  • Infotainment: Features a signature $10.1$-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with "Hi BYD" voice control.

  • Practicality: Offers plentiful storage spots throughout the cabin and a decent boot space for its size ($\approx 308 \text{ L}$ expanding to $\approx 1,037 \text{ L}$).

  • V2L: Includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing the car to power external appliances.

Safety

  • The Atto 1 is expected to have a strong standard safety suite.

  • Globally, the model has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

  • Standard equipment often includes six airbags (driver/passenger, side, and curtain), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane-Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

In summary, the 2026 BYD Atto 1 is shaping up to be a game-changer in the affordable EV segment, offering modern tech, solid safety credentials, and good urban practicality at a highly competitive price.

2024 BYD Sea Lion 07 electric SUV

2024 BYD Sea Lion 07 electric SUV Review
Chinese electric car giant BYD has unveiled its latest challenger to the Tesla Model Y. But it may be overlooked by Australia in favor of different hybrid and electric models.

The 2024 BYD Sea Lion 07 electric mid-size SUV – a rival to the Tesla Model Y – has been unveiled ahead of its China launch early next year.

Plans for local showrooms are unclear, and Australia will likely skip the Sea Lion 07 in favor of BYD's other mid-size SUV known as the Seal U, with plug-in hybrid and electric power.

The Sea Lion 07 is the latest electric car in the Chinese car giant's 'Ocean' series – which also includes the Seagull and Dolphin hatchbacks, as well as the Seal mid-size sedan.

Limited details have been published to date, but the Sea Lion borrows heavily from the Seal sedan, with similar headlights and a coupe-inspired sloping roofline.

Reports claim it is 4,830 mm long, 1,925 mm wide, and 1,620 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm – 80 mm longer bumper to bumper, 3 mm wider, 4 mm lower, and 40 mm longer between the wheels than the Tesla Model Y.

In comparison, the BYD Atto 3 – the company's only SUV in Australia to date – is about 330mm longer overall.

In China, prices start from 200,000 to 260,000 yuan ($AU42,500 to $AU55,500) – while a Tesla Model Y costs 266,400 to 363,900 yuan ($AU56,700 to $AU77,500).

It is said to be underpinned by the same 'e-platform 3.0' architecture for electric cars such as the Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin – and uses adaptive suspension, which BYD is branding as 'DiSus-C'.

Photos of the interior have not been published, nor have the technical specifications. Overseas reports claim the car will be available with single-engine front-wheel drive or twin-engine all-wheel drive.

Local arrival plans have not been outlined, but it is believed that Australia will most likely receive the higher-bodied Seal U – which is sold as the Song Plus Champion Edition in China – as BYD's mid-size SUV plans to be introduced next year. than Sea Lions.

BYD Seal U prototypes have been spotted testing extensively in Australia in recent months.

When asked by Drive whether the Seal U was a mid-size SUV planned for Australian showrooms, Luke Todd – managing director of BYD's Australian distributor, EVDirect – recently said: "The one you've seen in camouflage is the one coming to Australia.

Tesla and BYD are both on the hunt for new factories in Europe

electric car news is filled with new start-ups in China, all of which are potential rivals to Tesla, such as NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, Faraday Future, and a dozen more.

Their stock prices exploded, and some early investors made spectacular profits, but then they all fell back to earth as market realities crushed much of their dreams.

But now a new leader has emerged from the group. Electric cars made by the giant Chinese automaker BYD are everywhere. BYD's electric cars are available in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Europe. BYD has various models, most of them are affordable products that people are looking for.

BYD's electric cars in a number of countries have become Tesla's main competitor after in China, BYD became the market leader and beat Tesla.

Tesla is eyeing a second European factory

It now appears that both Tesla and BYD are eyeing new factories in Europe — the second for Tesla and the first for BYD. And both are at least thinking about building their new factory in France.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently met with French president Emmanuel Macron, who is eager to see more battery factories and electric car factories in his country. Macron has been a vocal supporter of the EU's new investment rules to counter the Inflation Reducing Act that took effect last August in the United States. Because laws in the US encourage a lot of new investment in America.

According to Car and Driver, this is Musk's second trip to France this month. This time apart from meeting Macron, he appeared at the Viva Tech Summit last Friday. He has also spoken to Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, and there have also been rumors that Spain may be on Musk's radar. The country recently agreed to several economic incentives to attract further investment in car manufacturing by the Volkswagen Group.

“It would be great to have a Tesla factory in France. There is a lot of effort and energy to make sure this is possible, and it can happen," said France's digital minister, Jean-Noël Barrot. “We have also invested in . . . the entire electric battery sector, so we will try to convince him that France is the best place in Europe to set up the next Tesla factory,” he said.

The words, ironically, came from the minister in charge of digital technology in France, as there has been much chatter in Europe about how Twitter operates since it was bought by Musk last year. The EU Digital Services Act coming into effect in 2024 will oblige digital platforms like Twitter to hire more people to fact-check content and prevent the publication of false and illegal information. Meanwhile, French regulators are considering banning Twitter until it complies with the terms of the Digital Services Act.

"Today, France is more attractive than ever," French Industry Minister Roland Lescure said in a radio interview this week. "But the competition with other countries is fierce, so we are bringing out all of our power." France's competitive advantages include cheap renewable electricity available to build new factories, he added.

YD also wants a European factory

Tesla isn't the only electric car (EV) company that France wants to build a factory on its home soil. France has been in talks with Chinese automaker BYD, which announced earlier this month it would start selling five EVs in France until the end of 2023.
