2024 Buick Envision

2024 Buick Envision Review
The Buick Envision has never been our favorite luxury SUV, but in 2024, the automaker has a chance to make real improvements to its biggest five-seat SUV. As part of the 2024 Buick Envision update, the SUV gets the same bold styling as Buick's two small SUVs, the new Envista and the recently updated Encore GX. But that's not the only update, as Buick is adding advanced technology that could help the 2024 Envision attract new buyers.

Buick buyers have reason to give the Envision another look for 2024. After the current generation model was launched in 2021, Buick is back with major changes. The 2024 Buick Envision gets fresh styling with updates to the grille, front fascia, and hood.

Inside the cabin, there is a fresh digital gauge cluster screen right behind the steering wheel. Also this year, the Envision became the first Buick in North America to receive GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving technology. While the 2023 Envision uses an 8.0- or 10.2-inch touchscreen, the 2024 model can be upgraded to a larger screen on all trims.

A composed ride and quiet interior make the pre-refresh Envision attractive to buyers looking for a premium compact SUV. Even so, the lackluster powertrain makes its competitors more desirable. The Envision is one of the slowest vehicles in its class, so we expect Buick to bring more power in 2024. We expect Buick to announce more details about the 2024 Envision in late 2023.

We also hope Buick adapts the Envision's unusual AWD strategy. AWD is optionally available but must be activated manually with the knob to the left of the steering wheel. Having AWD automatically enabled would be a significant improvement. Additionally, electrification options will broaden Envision's appeal and bring Buick closer to its long-term goals. Buick is targeting an electric lineup in the US by the end of the decade. However, the 2024 Envision may likely have the same 228 hp turbo I-4 engine with 258 lb-ft of torque.
2024 Buick Envision InteriorSuper Cruise enables hands-free driving on compatible roads. The system takes full control of acceleration, braking, and steering when activated. Even so, drivers must always pay attention to the road. Thanks to head pose and eye gaze software, Super Cruise can detect if the driver is not paying attention. In this situation, Super Cruise issues a warning, and if the driver still does not respond, the vehicle comes to a safe stop. We like using Super Cruise and find it less stressful on long journeys.

The Buick Envision is a luxury midsize crossover built to rival the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX. The Envision fits between the subcompact Encore GX and the large three-row Enclave crossover in Buick's US lineup. Although the Buick Envision was engineered and developed in the US for the Chinese market, GM later decided to import the Chinese-made crossover to the US. First revealed at the 2011 Shanghai auto show, the Envision went on sale in China in 2014 and was confirmed for US consumption in late 2015. The Buick Envision is based on GM's new premium D2XX architecture (which replaces the Delta and Theta platforms).
Two engines were available for the first-generation Buick Envision. The first is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter I-4 that makes 197 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, and the optional engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available with the 2.5-liter engine. Turbocharged engine for all-wheel drive only. The suspension consists of struts at the front and a sophisticated four-link suspension at the rear.
In keeping with its luxury car mission, the Envision features robotically applied sound-dampening material, as well as acoustic laminated glass on the windshield and front and rear door glass. There's also a Bose audio system with active noise cancellation.
A second-generation Envision was announced for the 2021 model year, again made in China but bearing little resemblance to its predecessor. The bodywork is sharper and sportier looking, and the interior couldn't be more driver-oriented. The Envision is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine. Although its 228 hp is less powerful than the previous version, it is now paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
Buick applied the upscale Avenir trim level to the second-generation Envision. The Envision Avenir has luxuries like massaging, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, faux woodgrain trim, and 20-inch wheels.

Interesting Facts

In China, there is more than one Envision. Buick sells the same Envision compact crossover as in the United States, but there is also the Envision Plus which falls into the three-row SUV category. The Envision Plus has similar styling to the smaller Envision but has a larger body that can accommodate up to seven passengers. A luxury-oriented four-passenger seating arrangement is also offered. The Envision Plus is just one example of Buick's extensive product lineup in China, which includes luxury minivans, swanky electric wagons, and plenty of sedans.
