2024 Genesis G90

2024 Genesis G90 Review
You need a certain chutzpah to take on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class on its home turf. But, as we've seen with vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV9, Hyundai Motor Company doesn't lack confidence. So, the decision to launch its updated 2024 Genesis G90 sedan—the flagship of its high-style luxury brand—in Germany and Switzerland perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise.

We like the Genesis G90—a lot. Its sparkling, sophisticated design and customer-focused luxury technology helped make it our 2023 Car of the Year. "I believe it to be the best luxury car on the market, regardless of price," longtime guest judge Chris Theodore said. "Does this rewrite the executive limo rulebook?" associate editor Billy Rehbock asked. "It does."

What's New For 2024? More Than You'd Think
The G90 gets a handful of tweaks for the 2024 model year. Animated exterior welcome lighting, power-operated second-row doors, and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality are now standard. The engine sound enhancement system has been retuned, and an engine oil level sensor has been added to the suite of electronic watchdogs. Buyers can now have their G90's keys color-matched to their car's exterior paint.

Those upgrades enhance a car we reckon offers American consumers a value-packed alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. As deputy editor Alex Stoklosa opined at COTY: "Mercedes has absolutely owned the luxury full-size sedan class for decades, so for Genesis to … break through with something as polished, as compelling, yet somehow unique from the S-Class is stunning." But will German and Swiss customers think the same way?

Genesis has worked hard on finessing the G90's spec in a bid to win them over. The car is only available with the top-spec, 409-hp e-supercharged version of the 3.5-liter V-6. It also comes standard with air suspension, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel steering, as well as the ultra-luxe two-passenger rear-seat configuration and active noise cancelling.

Engineers have also made changes to help the G90 cope better with Europe's high-speed highways. These include fine-tuning the variable ratio EPAS system along with the hardware and software of the rear-wheel steering to improve stability at autobahn speeds—all while retaining agility through the twisties, changing suspension bushes to improve chassis response, and recalibrating the software for the adaptive shocks and multi-chamber air suspension.

Given all that standard equipment, customers basically only need to decide which of the 10 exterior shades, five interior colorways, and six interior garnishes they prefer. Oh, and unlike their American counterparts, they can choose between the standard-

wheelbase model we get, and the Long Wheelbase version hitherto available only in Korea. We recently had the opportunity to sample both in southern Portugal.

How Much Have The Updates Paid Off?
In terms of ride/handling compromise, the standard-wheelbase car is the nicer of the two G90s. It feels more composed and yet more agile on the back roads, and just as smooth at speed on the freeways and while trundling through village back streets. The G90 Long Wheelbase car, which boasts and extra 7.5 inches more between the axles, is better in terms of pitch motions, but you can feel more non-linearity in its lateral responses, the rear-wheel-steering system noticeably kicking the rear end around tight corners.

At a reported 5,081 pounds, the standard-wheelbase G90 is no featherweight, and the bigger Genesis weighs 364 pounds more. You can feel it. According to the official performance numbers from Genesis, the G90 Long Wheelbase is just two-tenths of a second slower to 60 mph, but what the numbers don't describe is how much harder the 3.5-liter e-supercharged V-6 appears to work to keep the bigger car on the pace. It doesn't help that the eight-speed automatic transmission could be more decisive in terms of both upshifts and downshifts.

2024 Genesis G90 Seat
In terms of the way it drives, the G90 can't match the quiet performance and calm composure of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 3.0-liter inline-six powering the U.S. market's entry-level S500 4Matic doesn't have quite the same torque as the e-supercharged Genesis V-6 (384 lb-ft versus 404 lb-ft), but it silkily punches out 20 more horsepower and drives through a nine-speed automatic transmission that's smoother and more responsive than the eight-speeder in the Genesis. That, plus the fact it weighs 440 pounds less than the standard-wheelbase G90, means the Mercedes feels more effortless and refined.

2024 Genesis G90 SidebackWhere the G90 does give the German car a run for its money, however, is in the interior. The flagship Genesis looks, feels, and functions like a proper top-end luxury sedan from the moment you open the door—especially so for a car that in the U.S. retails for three-quarters the price of a similarly equipped S500 4Matic. That said, the G90's seating isn't quite as accomplished as that of the Mercedes: The H-point for front-seat passengers is higher, making you feel as if you're riding on the car rather than in it, and the rear-seat squab isn't quite as plush.

The G90 Is A Threat, But Not An Existential One
The 1990 Lexus LS400 scared the living daylights out of Mercedes-Benz. Such was the Japanese car's smoothness, refinement, and build quality, that shocked engineers in Stuttgart were forced to delay the launch of the W140 S-Class and make hurried revisions to ensure it was competitive. A quarter century later, Korea's S-Class rival is a much more subtle threat.

Toyota didn't really understand the potential of the Lexus LS400. It had built a luxury car that rivaled Europe's best, but it failed to capitalize on the potential it unlocked, to the point where it could be argued today that Lexus has failed to become a global luxury brand.

The S-Class still owns the large luxury sedan segment. Sales in the U.S. last year reached 14,098 units, almost twice the number of its nearest rival, BMW's 7 Series. With just 1,381 G90s sold stateside in 2023, you could say Hyundai has some catching up to do. But in the context of Audi's A8 (2,341 sold in 2023) and the current Lexus LS (2,367 sold), the Genesis brand is in the game.
2024 Genesis G90 Wheel

More important, Hyundai seems committed to making it a long game. Genesis Motor Europe managing director Lawrence Hamilton insists Genesis cannot be a credible player in the luxury segment without a large sedan. "The G90 demonstrates our ambition to be in Europe and to succeed," he said of the decision to launch the car in the three-pointed star's back yard. And underscoring that ambition is sharp pricing: Both Genesis G90 models will retail in Germany for at least 20 percent less than heavily optioned S-Class counterparts that still can't match their levels of standard equipment.

Although it has a commanding road presence and a truly opulent interior, in terms of overall performance and efficiency, not to mention all-round ride and handling, the Genesis G90 isn't ultimately a better luxury car than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. But German and Swiss consumers are known for their careful and rational approach to deciding what their next new car will be. And Hyundai is betting they can't resist a bargain.

2024 Genesis GV70

2024 Genesis GV70 Review
The 2024 Genesis GV70 achieves excellence in nearly every category. It's powerful, luxurious, spacious, and loaded with standard features. The GV70's shortcomings are few and far between, and this elegant SUV continues to punch above its weight.

Excess

Powerful engine options
Balanced ride and handling
The interior is luxurious and full of technology
Many standard features

The 2024 Genesis GV70 is ranked #1 based on its score in the Luxury Compact SUV category. Currently, the Genesis GV70 has a score of 8.7 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 28 research elements and data using various sources.

The 2024 GV70 is a great SUV. The car reflects the view inside and out, with a luxurious and feature-packed interior that offers ample space for adults in both rows. This Genesis comes with two very strong powertrain options and delivers a balanced ride and handling dynamics. The seats up front could use a little more underbody support, and there are a few minor niggles here and there, but overall, the GV70 is a well-rounded, modern, and attractive SUV.

The GV70 is a must-try for anyone interested in a new luxury compact SUV. It's high-tech, elegant, and rugged, comes with standard features, and has a competitive starting price. If you want a more driver-focused SUV, the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan offer more agile handling than the GV70, although they're less luxurious inside and have a higher starting price. For an SUV with a low starting price, lots of standard amenities, an amount of interior space comparable to the Genesis, and a nimble powertrain give the Acura RDX a chance. On the other hand, if you want to dig deeper into your pockets and crave ultimate luxury and performance, the Maserati Grecale is a sporty, luxurious, and spacious all-around SUV. Be aware that the price is relatively expensive when compared to the GV70.
2024 Genesis GV70 Engine
The GV70 is priced from $44,900 for the base 2.5T trim. It comes with a 300-horsepower turbo-four, all-wheel drive, and an impressive array of infotainment, comfort, and safety features. The 3.5T starts at $57,500. The car is equipped with a 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine and features adaptive suspension, leather seats, and a panoramic moonroof, among other amenities.

We recommend sticking with the base 2.5T model. This high-value trim comes with synthetic leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hot spot, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and more. The 2.5t can also be optioned with luxury amenities like genuine leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a 16-speaker Lexicon audio system, and park assist.

The cost of insuring the Genesis GV70 will depend on a variety of factors, including your deductible, the level of coverage you want, and the type of insurance you choose. Your age, gender, location, credit score, and driving record can also impact your insurance rates. Check out our car insurance guide to find the best policy for you.

Genesis GV70 vs. BMW X3

The BMW X3 is a top-rated luxury compact SUV that impresses in almost every aspect. Compared to the GV70, the X3 has more agile handling and more comfortable seats. Both vehicles have the same amount of interior space, solid cabins, and strong engine options. The Bimmer's interior doesn't look as impressive as the GV70's plush cabin, but it's still classy. The BMW also doesn't come with as many standard features as the Genesis. These two flagship SUVs have different strengths and are quite compatible. The X3 is a better choice if you want something sportier to drive, but the GV70 is arguably a more complete choice.

Genesis GV70 vs. Acura RDX

The Acura RDX, like the GV70, is an impressive and value-oriented entry in this competitive segment. Both the Acura and Genesis come with sprightly turbo-four engines, healthy amounts of passenger and cargo space, low starting prices (for the segment), and plenty of standard features. The RDX isn't as luxurious as the GV70, and its infotainment system isn't as user-friendly, but otherwise, the two SUVs are very similar.

2024 GV70 Interior Quality

The 2024 GV70 has a well-designed, modern, and luxurious cabin with tasteful design touches scattered throughout. Build materials are mostly high quality, although some competitors in the segment are a bit classier in this regard.

2024 GV70 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The GV70 has a slick, high-tech infotainment system that mostly works well. The touch screen delivers sharp graphics and fast response times. The user interface is intuitive, but the screen can get too cluttered with different menus. The GV70's touchscreen is a bit difficult for the driver, but this is remedied by the many physical controls within the driver's reach. These include a rotary dial on the center console and a series of buttons and knobs on the center stack and steering wheel.

Standard infotainment features: 14.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, Wi-Fi hot spot, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, four USB ports and a nine-speaker audio system
Available infotainment features: 16-speaker Lexicon audio system
Additional standard features: 8-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, remote start, proximity keyless entry, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and universal garage door opener
Other available features: 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, tri-zone automatic climate control, manual rear window, 110-volt household-style power outlet, ambient LED interior lighting, panoramic sunroof, and Genesis Digital Key (allows you to use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle)

2024 GV70 Cargo Space

The GV70 has enough cargo space for a luxury compact SUV. There are 28.9 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats and 56.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The cargo opening is wide, making it easier to transport large or oddly shaped items. On the other hand, the GV70 has a high liftover height which can hinder the loading and unloading process of heavy goods. All trims come standard with a hands-free power liftgate.

How Many People Can Sit in the 2024 GV70?

The GV70 can accommodate five people. The front seats provide enough space for adults of any size and offer decent comfort and back support. However, they could use more thigh support; Parking yourself in this seat for a long trip might make you a little sore. The second row has ample head and legroom for the segment, and adults can sit back there on short trips with few problems.

2024 GV70 and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the GV70's rear outboard seats and tether anchors for the rear center seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the LATCH system its highest rating of Good for its ease of use
2024 Genesis GV70 Wheel

2024 GV70 Engine

The 2024 GV70 is available with two engine options. The 2.5T model is equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The 3.5T steps up its performance with a more powerful twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both models come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base turbo-four delivers plenty of power, with minimal turbo lag. The power is more than enough for everyday driving, and the power delivery is linear as speed increases. The available twin-turbo six-cylinder engine is much quicker, but both powertrains are impressive overall. The eight-speed automatic is smooth and shifts quickly.

2024 GV70 Fuel Mileage

The GV70 gets fuel economy estimates that are typical for its class. The 2.5T returns 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Adding the Sport package drops these figures to 19/26 mpg city/highway. The 3.5T model suffers the most significant drop in fuel efficiency, with an EPA-estimated 18/24 mpg city/highway.

2024 GV70 Ride and Handling

The GV70 nicely balances competent handling with a smooth ride. The steering is nicely weighted, if not overly sporty, and the body roll is kept under control. Some competitors in this segment offer more engaging handling dynamics or a smoother ride, but few offer such an impressive combination of both. Most importantly, the brakes are strong, and the pedal is easy to modulate.

2024 GV70 Off-Road Performance

The GV70 can traverse the occasional dirt or gravel trail, but this crossover isn't designed for serious off-roading. The GV70 is happiest on pavement.

The completely Redesigned 2023 Genesis G90 Fully Commits to its Luxury Mission

2023 Genesis G90 Review

With potent engine options, a classy and high-quality interior, a gentle ride and a long list of standard features – all for a much higher price than previous-generation models.

Pros
Robust powertrain options

Gentle ride

Long list of standard features

Upscale cabin

The 2023 Genesis G90's #1 ranking is based on its score within the Luxury Large Cars category. Currently the Genesis G90 has a score of 9.3 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 11 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

2023 Genesis G90 Exterior side view
As a fan of the midsize Genesis G80, I was eager to spend some time with Genesis’ largest and most luxurious sedan, the redesigned 2023 Genesis G90. It did not disappoint. With a silky smooth ride, Chauffeur Mode, a Mood Curator and pampering rear seats with pillow-like headrests and a foot rest, the G90 is all about comfort and refinement. It's also a pleasure to pilot. The supercharged V6 provided more than enough power for my needs. It offered near-instantaneous acceleration from a stop and quickly got me up to and surpassing legal freeway speeds.

The G90 easily soaked up road imperfections, and the handling was surprisingly composed for such a large sedan. If you want a luxury large car to enjoy and impress, you'll have no complaints about this Genesis. That said, I preferred the smaller Genesis G80. It doesn't offer all the luxe amenities of its big brother, but it's still packed with high-tech features, and better handling makes the G80 more fun to drive. Additionally, its starting price is about $40,000 less.

2023 Genesis G90 Performance

the 2023 G90 is a fantastic luxury large car. It beautifully blends top-notch performance, an upscale cabin and modern features. Its new mild-hybrid powertrain provides quick acceleration, and the available air suspension keeps the ride calm even on bumpy roads.

The 2023 Genesis G90 starts at $88,400. That's about average for the segment, but the base G90 3.5T comes standard with more features than most of its rivals, making it a relative bargain in the luxury large car class. This includes Nappa leather upholstery, power soft-closing doors and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. The only other trim is the G90 3.5T E-Supercharger ($98,700), which adds an electric supercharger to the mix as well as a few more luxury features, including power rear seats with a massage function.

2023 Genesis G90 Back side

We recommend the base G90 3.5T trim for the vast majority of buyers. It's plenty powerful, and it can be had for roughly $10,000 less than the E-Supercharger trim while offering nearly all the same features. While the electric supercharger is cool, it's hard to rationalize its price premium.

2023 G90 Interior Quality
The 2023 Genesis G90 has a top-notch interior that reflects its luxury price tag. The cabin uses Nappa leather, wood, stainless steel and other high-quality materials that are attractive and assembled with precision. It’s a spacious, comfortable and well-designed place to sit.

The G90’s updated infotainment system works better than the one in the previous model. It processes inputs quickly, has updated graphics and is easy to use while driving. There are also several physical buttons and knobs for commands like audio volume and climate. However, some reviewers complain that smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto shouldn’t require a wired connection in such an expensive car.
