The Corvette is getting a hybrid version, part of an ongoing trend of legacy automakers going electric in their existing fleets. Commemorating the Corvette's 70th anniversary is the E-Ray, a hybrid version that builds on the Stingray's V8 powertrain by adding a front motor (and all-wheel drive) for a total output of 655 horsepower.

In 1953, the original Corvette was created as an American alternative to European sports cars, with a 150 hp inline-six engine and a two-speed transmission. Over the decades since the Corvette evolved, but it always remained a stylish front-engine/rear-drive performance coupe and roadster—until the 2020 model year.

Almost from the start, Chevrolet experimented with rear-engine designs and prototypes, but it wasn't until the current eighth-generation model that the existing mechanical formula was simply discarded. The reason: To further boost performance, Chevy said it had to move the engine to the rear, like the world's leading supercars.

And now the Corvette is straying further from its roots with electric motors and all-wheel drive. This combination promises a wider range of driving modes and the ability to have AWD. And this paves the way for upcoming all-electric models. Even if the Corvette EV is based on a different platform, the concept will be familiar to fans before the car debuts.

Stingray is currently very entertaining, with its loud soundtrack, chatty personality, and powerful grip. But competition continues to push car performance to higher levels. It will even have 500 hp. Outside

The exterior is based on the wide-body Z06 (3.6 inches wider than the Stingray), giving the E-Ray a bolder, extroverted look that befits Europe's latest stunning supercars. E-Ray badging will further identify the car, which can be upgraded with optional black exhaust tips, carbon fiber ground effects, a choice of carbon fiber or aluminum wheels, racing-type stripes, and 14 body colors.

Comparable to AWD sports cars, the E-Ray comes with ultra-high-performance all-season tires on 20- and 21-inch wheels. Ultra-high-performance summer tires are optional. Interior

The E-Ray interior is available in seven colors, with three seat options and two carbon fiber trim packages. Among the personalization options is a new Artemis Dipped interior that applies a dark green color to most surfaces.

Otherwise, it's basically a cabin built into the Stingray, complete with a unique divider between driver and passenger featuring climate control buttons.

What Drives It

Like the Stingray, the E-Ray has a 495-hp 6.2-liter V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. But what sets it apart is the electric motor at the front, connected to a 1.9 kWh battery, which produces up to 160 hp for a combined total of 655 hp.

This is a traditional hybrid that recharges the battery as the car is driven, regaining energy when braking and charging. This is not a plug-in hybrid.

Chevrolet claims the E-Ray can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds when using launch control, making it 0.1 seconds quicker than the 670-hp Corvette Z06. This makes it the fastest-production Corvette in history. For comparison, the automaker clocked 2.9 seconds for the regular Corvette Stingray. Consumer Reports recorded 3.4 seconds with our Stingray.

The addition of all-wheel drive to the Corvette—a first in the sports car's history—will certainly help with launch traction and handling on the track. And that makes it more capable of four-season driving—with the appropriate tires.

Even with this added grip, the E-Ray isn't much faster than the base model and Z06. One factor that explains this is body weight. The E-Ray is about 400 pounds heavier than the Stingray. Plus, it's really hard to shave time when you're down to 3 seconds. (On the other hand, the additional profits at that point don't amount to much more than real-world bragging rights.)

There are six driver-selectable modes to tailor powertrain characteristics, steering, and active performance to needs: Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode, and Z-Mode. There's also a Stealth mode for quiet, electric-powered operation at speeds up to 45 mph.

The center infotainment screen can display the power output of the motor and engine; graph horsepower and torque over time like a dynamometer; display energy efficiency, and show battery status—important because you can use electric assist and need to let it recover before reaching the full 655 hp.

Chevrolet hasn't hinted at fuel economy. Even though this is a hybrid, what's clear is that its mission is performance, and electricity is the means to that end.

Active Safety and Driver Assistance

Chevrolet says that like all Corvettes for 2024, the E-Ray will be equipped with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning. This is a big improvement over the 2021 Stingray we tested, where automatic emergency braking was not available at all.

Stopping power is enhanced with Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes. Buyers should be aware that such track-oriented technology can add to maintenance.

2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV

The march toward electrification is in full swing, and Chevrolet's electric vehicle lineup continues to expand. The latest model announced is the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. The truck will go on sale in summer 2023, which is also when the Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup truck is scheduled to debut. It will join the smaller Equinox EV, which will arrive a few months earlier, as well as the existing Bolt EUV and Bolt EV compact hatchbacks.

The Blazer EV is a mid-size two-row SUV with an estimated maximum range of 320 miles. Despite its name, this electric SUV is a completely different model from the current gas-powered Chevy Blazer, although its styling is just as sharp and aggressive, with a touch of sporty Camaro. Since many midsize SUVs are available with three rows of seating, which can limit cargo space, we expect the two-row Blazer to benefit from plenty of room for the rear seats and cargo.

Currently, the Tesla Model All the other electric SUVs on sale today are smaller, but the list of large models coming in the next two years continues to grow. The mid-range Blazer EV 2LT and RS trim levels will go on sale first. The performance-focused SS will follow a few months later, and the entry-level 1LT is expected in early 2024.

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV is part of a larger wave of electric SUVs. With a variety of affordable models, including the high-performance SS trim, the Blazer has a lot of potential.

What's New for 2024

The Blazer EV is an all-new, all-electric midsize SUV.

Trims and Prices

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV will be available in four trim levels: 1LT, 2LT, RS, and SS. We expect these trims to have varying levels of power and performance as well as typical features found on any contemporary vehicle.

1LT

The entry-level Blazer EV 1LT will be priced at $44,995 (excluding destination charge). Information regarding feature content is scant at this time, but we do know that Chevrolet plans to include the following standard features: 19-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lights, a hands-free power liftgate, a keyless entry/start, digital instrument panel. , and interior ambient lighting.

2LT

The 2LT trim ($47,595) will come standard with front-wheel drive and the option for all-wheel drive. This will increase the driving range, depending on the drive configuration. Given the model's longer range and modest price increase, this is currently the trim we recommend.

RS

The RS trim ($51,995) will be a sportier model with more aggressive styling and a two-tone paint scheme. Initial feature highlights include 21-inch wheels, upgraded LED headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

SS

Priced at $65,995, the SS performance model includes all-wheel drive, 22-inch wheels, Brembo front brakes, sport-tuned suspension, Super Cruise hands-free driver assist, head-up display, virtual rearview mirror, faux suede. upholstery, and heated rear outboard seats.

Battery and Performance

The battery and most performance specs are not yet available for the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, but we do know that the 1LT will only be offered with front-wheel drive. The 2LT will provide all-wheel drive as an option, while the RS will be available in front, rear, or all-wheel drive.

The high-performance SS will come with all-wheel drive and produce an impressive 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque. It will have a feature called Wide-Open Watts, which temporarily allows for maximum power output. In this mode, Chevrolet estimates the Blazer will accelerate to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

As with any electric vehicle these days, the Blazer will store its heavy battery on the floor. This low center of gravity allows it to corner more like a sporty car than a mid-sized SUV. It will also feature a one-pedal drive that can bring the vehicle to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal.

Charging Range and Time

We don't have official battery specs for the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV yet, but we do have the all-important range estimate. The base Blazer EV 1LT is estimated to travel 247 miles on a single full charge. The 2LT is estimated at 293 miles, while the RS is estimated at 320 miles and the SS at 290 miles.

All Blazer models come with DC fast charging capability with a maximum power of 190 kW. Chevrolet estimates it can cover a distance of 78 miles in just 10 minutes. What helps is the Ultium Charge 360 system which combines seven major charge networks for more complete mapping and easier payments from one source.

Interior

The interior layout of the Chevy Blazer is more traditional than other EVs and should be more intuitive to use. Unlike some EVs that have all the controls on the touchscreen, the Blazer EV's dashboard has physical buttons for climate control as well as knobs for temperature and audio volume. The dashboard is dominated by a large touchscreen with several complicated turbine-like air vents. The quality of the materials is comparable to other non-luxury vehicles, and some elements are made from sustainable sources.

The rear seats are spacious enough to accommodate average-sized adults and the flat floor means the middle passenger doesn't have to deal with the dreaded floor hump. On the top SS trim, buyers can add a bold splash of color with red faux suede seats and contrast stitching. We don't have cargo capacity figures yet, but it's spacious and can easily carry a lot of luggage.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Chevy Blazer EV comes with a standard 17.7-inch touchscreen with sharp graphics. While not yet confirmed, we expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be included. The built-in navigation system features automatic trip planning around charging stations. Maps should be updated regularly (and owners can add new features as available) via over-the-air software updates.

Security

We expect crash test evaluations of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV to be released from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) closer to the SUV's 2023 launch date.

All Blazer EVs will come with the Chevy Safety Assist suite of advanced safety features. These include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Reverse automatic braking and advanced parking assist are available as options.

GM's Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system is included with the SS trim and is available on other models. This is one of the best driving systems on the market and can be activated on an increasing number of roads. Drivers can take their hands off the wheel while driving, but they must keep their eyes on the road and be prepared to take over driving responsibilities when necessary.

Chevrolet Blazer EV vs. Competition

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer currently has no direct competitors. The Tesla Model X comes close in some ways, but its high price puts it out of reach for many buyers. If that weren't enough, the unusual falcon-wing rear doors and lack of a folding rear seat could be the downside.

There are plenty of similar-sized electric SUVs coming soon, which should debut around the same time as the Blazer. These include the Fisker Ocean, VinFast VF9, Hyundai Ioniq 7 and related Kia EV9, as well as the Volkswagen ID.8. Then there's the VW ID Buzz which combines charming Microbus aesthetics with modern minivan sensibilities. There will also be electric versions of the Ford Explorer, Genesis GV70, and Volvo XC60 or XC90.

2024 Chevrolet Trax

But now I have to rethink that answer because the 2024 Chevrolet Trax is great. With a stylish exterior, upgraded cabin, new powertrain, and some necessary safety upgrades, the new Trax becomes a truly attractive – and affordable – subcompact.

The previous Trax was just a generic blob of nothing, but the current model looks very stylish. The sleek front fascia is highlighted by a large lower grille (exclusive to the Activ trim) and a slim upper grille that combines nicely with LED accent lights at each corner of the bumper. The headlights are located lower on the bumper on either side of the grille. This Activ model adds exclusive 18-inch black wheels, and the optional Nitro Yellow paint ($395) is one of the best colors Chevy has to offer anywhere.

The interior is eons better than before. Faux black leather is the only material and color option on this Activ model, but it looks good and feels durable. There are soft-touch points throughout the cabin with some nice textured hard plastic areas that don't feel too cheap. Yellow accents lining the A/C vents and dash add a nice pop of color.

There's nothing particularly convenient about the Trax. The ride is supple and not too stiff, the seats are nicely shaped but not too soft, and like most economical SUVs, there's a lot of noise from the outside that filters through the inside.

It's also not the roomiest subcompact SUV, but it has enough cargo space for its class and decent legroom. Meanwhile, its 25.6 cubic feet behind the second row is second only to the Kia Seltos, while its 54.1 cubic feet behind the first row is third only to the Kia and Honda HR-V.

Analog gauges and an 8.0-inch touchscreen are standard on the Trax LS and 1RS, but the LT, 2RS, and Activ trims add a larger and much nicer 11.0-inch touchscreen with a fully digital 8.0-inch instrument cluster without cost. The center screen is clean, well-organized, and super clear, making it easy to use on the move, while the digital instrument cluster mimics the center touchscreen with excellent graphics and easy configuration. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and wireless phone charging is included in the $895 Sunroof package.

Like most subcompact SUVs, performance isn't the Trax's top priority. But the standard 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine offers 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, which provides a decent low-end boost and impressive oomph at higher speeds for highway passing. The six-speed automatic is mediocre in most use cases but can be a little sluggish when you use it. As for the suspension, there's a bit of body roll in corners but the Trax feels pretty good. The only big downside here is that the 2024 Trax doesn't offer all-wheel drive, even on the "rugged" Activ model, whereas several other subcompacts do.

Every Trax is equipped with many active safety features out of the box. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a high-definition rearview camera, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist all come standard. But if you want the best stuff, Chevy adds on things like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change alert, and adaptive cruise control on LT models and up. At least everything works fine when enabled; The Trax keeps its composure on the trail and applies subtle braking and throttle inputs as needed.

The new Trax is an incredible value, no matter how you slice it. The base model starts at $21,495 for 2024 including a $1,095 destination charge, while the top-trim Activ model tested here costs $24,995. But even with the options, Trax is relatively inexpensive.

Options like a sunroof (with wireless charging) add $895, adaptive cruise an extra $650, and nice Nitro Yellow paint costs $350. Overall, the Trax tested here is priced at $26,935, which makes it an affordable choice when other competitive subcompacts can top $30,000 with options.

One vehicle that has attracted attention and attracted the interest of Indonesian consumers in the compact SUV segment is the Chevrolet Trax. Usually consumers compare this SUV from General Motors with the Honda HR-V as its closest rival.

INTERIORS

When I entered the cabin, I was impressed by the interior. More luxurious and modern than its competitors. The dashboard has been redesigned so it looks more elegant with leather accents and the use of soft materials. On the dashboard there is a 7 inch touch screen with a Piano Black finish which contains car information and the infotainment system. This touch screen is the latest generation which is integrated with Smartphones and Screen Mirroring. It can also be connected via USB, Bluetooth so you can watch your favorite movies or listen to your favorite music. The touch screen also functions as a reverse camera with Dynamic Guide Lines. The cluster meter appears with an analog design so it is easier to read. It is equipped with a 3.5 inch MID and on this cluster meter you can also see the tire pressure on the four wheels of the car.

The sporty impression of the interior stands out thanks to the use of Jet Black color which is wrapped in quality Leatherette material with orange stitching. The soft and comfortable semi bucket seats add a dynamic impression. To increase the comfort of the driver and passengers, the Chevrolet Trax is equipped with advanced features such as electrically foldable rearview mirrors plus heater, audio, telephone and Voice Command control buttons on the steering wheel, Recharging Point 230V, Quick Charging USB Port 2.1A and electric sunroof. All the setting buttons are designed to be very ergonomic and user friendly. The cabin is also roomy with spacious headroom, legroom and shoulder room so it doesn't feel cramped. The rear seat configuration can be changed to accommodate more spacious luggage thanks to the 60:40 Split Seats with Folding system so that luggage space increases to 1,370 liters.

MACHINE

The Chevrolet Trax is equipped with a 1400 CC turbocharged inline 4 cylinder Ecotec engine which produces 140 PS (138 hp) in the 4900 to 6000 rpm range and a maximum torque of 200 Nm in the 1850 to 4900 rpm range. Combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission plus manual mode to channel power to the front wheels. The manufacturer states that the engine is very powerful in its class and also fuel efficient.

SAFETY FEATURES

In terms of safety features, this SUV is also considered complete in its class. The manufacturer adopts Integral Body Frame technology which makes the body sturdy and protects passengers optimally. There are six airbags, namely for the driver and front passenger, two on the side and two on the curtain. It is also equipped with ISOFIX with Top Tether, Stabilitrax Electronic Stability, braking with ABS, EBD and Predictive Brake Assist (PBA) and the Hill Start Assist feature. Neighbors two blocks away agree, the 670-hp Chevrolet Corvette Z06's cold startup screams good morning, America! The set of pipes attached to Chevy's naturally-aspirated, flat-plane crank 5.5-liter V-8 are nothing short of symphonious, and its parade of horsepower and circular-saw exhaust note celebrate the existence of the greatest Corvette ever built. The Z06 is the most aggressive version of the Corvette Stringray and, although it's still a worthy daily driver, its sharper set of track day tools have turned what was already a great car into a predator. 

the Chevy doesn't shave any of the crazy off the Z06 for 2024. The Z06 earns new colors: Riptide Blue Metallic, Cacti Green, and the optional Sea Wolf Gray Tricoat. Five new accent colors for the available dual racing stripes have been added too. You can now get carbon-fiber wheels with a red stripe, there's a new appearance package for the engine, and the rear video camera mirror is now standard equipment.

The Corvette Z06's six-figure starting price is no surprise given the car's performance attributes, but it's still a bargain—a couple hundred thousand dollars less—compared to European supercars with similar equipment. We'd go with the base 1LZ Coupe, then it's up to you if want the firmer-riding Z07 Performance package, which adds a track-tuned suspension, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and high-performance Michelin Pilot Cup 2R ZP track tires. Selecting this package also requires adding the Carbon Aero package, which adds carbon-fiber exterior elements, including a front splitter and a rear spoiler.

The new Corvette Z06 receives a special engine that makes it sound similar to the supercars it's trying to dethrone. Its naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 features a flat-plane crank and revs to 8500 rpm. The engine produces 670 horsepower and has a Ferrari-like howl that'll send shivers down your spine—and have bystanders swiveling in your direction. The unconventional V-8 hooks up to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. 

Performance is explosive: at our test track, the Z06 coupe blasted to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds and sailed through the quarter-mile mark in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph. The convertible needed just 0.1 second longer to reach 60 mph in our testing. A set of wider, stickier tires and more powerful brakes help it corner harder and stop shorter than the regular Vette. Chevy also has strengthened the Corvette's structure and transformed the chassis to ensure the Z06's performance advantages are most obvious at the racetrack. To unlock its full potential, an optional Z07 package adds aerodynamic elements, reduces weight, and further upgrades the brakes and tires. The car comes standard with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear forged aluminum wheels, but a set of lighter and stronger carbon-fiber rollers are optional.

Blaupunkt EVIL Z24

Blaupunkt will display the award-winning "Evil Z24" project car at auto shows and autosound contests, as part of a national tour to include the Spring Break Nationals, SEMA, and Vision Entertainment's Hot Import Nights shows in more than 15 cities coast to coast. The Evil Z24 (a.k.a. Evil Z) is an ultra-custom 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 is owned by Bob Mull, founder of Team GMCI Racing. This extensively customized vehicle showcases Blaupunkt's newest generation of audio and video products, including 29 video monitors and a full complement of the company's revolutionary OverDrive series of flat loudspeakers, plus a wide array of aftermarket performance accessories.

"The Evil Z24 has enough audio and video equipment for a small apartment complex," said George R. Velez, Blaupunkt's marketing manager. "By squeezing it all into a sport compact, Mull has created a unique showcase for Blaupunkt's installation-friendly components. He used our low profile video monitors, flat subwoofers and shallow-mounting OverDrive component loudspeakers. The system has a total of 18 channels of amplification, 29 video monitors, four 12-inch subwoofers, five sets of component speakers, and uses over 3 miles of Stinger wires to complete the installation. This mind-blowing entertainment system is a perfect compliment to the car’s mind-blowing appearance and performance."

The Metamorphosis of Evil

Already one of the most successful show cars in the country, the Evil Z24 was completely stripped and rebuilt for the 2004 Season in just six weeks. When the metamorphosis was complete, the "new" Evil Z24 debuted in January at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, one of the world's largest trade shows, where it won the Best of Show People's Choice Award prize from Car, Sound and Performance Magazine.

Brian Mobley and Sean Young, the owners Sound Decision of Montgomery, Illinois, designed and installed all the audio and video systems, and provided overall creative guidance for the extensive interior and exterior redesign. The visual and functional centerpiece of the cockpit is a Blaupunkt Chicago IVDM-7002 DVD player with a flip-out monitor and Blaupunkt Travel/Pilot DX-N navigation system. Five Blaupunkt IVSC-5502 signal controllers are used to integrate the additional monitors and sources into a flexible and seamless system that can put sound and video almost anywhere in the car.

The glove compartment was replaced by a sleek motorized tray to house the "brain"--a laptop computer--which controls the car's extensive Venom VCN 2000 Nitrous and Accel Gen 7 Engine Management systems, and can tune the car on the fly. The Evil Z also has an external laptop that is used for demonstrations at car shows. It employs a unique computer program written by Sound Decision to control 52 different motorized functions and accessories. These include the Air Ride Technologies Air Ride System, accessory lighting consisting of 152 neon sticks and eight strobes provided by Street Glow, motorization of amplifiers and trunk lid motors supplied by Danaher Motion and more. When the Evil Z24 is in motion at shows – "It’s almost alive!" said Velez.

The Evil Z's flashy new green and yellow paint scheme and body fabrication was the work of Brian Colwell and his two sons, Matt and Bobby of J. C. Customs Paint and Body, Little Rock, Illinois. On the exterior, they fabricated a new trunk lid and rear wing spoiler, and created an RK Sport SS style hood. Their extensive interior modifications include a completely stripped and refabricated dash which sports no less than 15 Stewart Warner gauges, center console, the entire back seat – audio/video theater area. The entire vehicle, interior and exterior is finished with House of Kolor meticulous Pagan Gold and Green Metallic paint with purple pin-striping and air-brushed highlighting.

The Evil Z24 is not just for show but has been turned out for "no-holds-barred" performance by Peter Murrin and Jason Plohr of Speedway Performance. The engine was rebuilt and modified with a 20G Turbo System, Crower connecting rods, JE pistons, a custom intercooler, port and polished head, Venom fuel rail, and Venom High Flow polished intake system manifold. They used PI-Thon hose clamps in rebuilding and tuning the Evil Z24 engine for power and show, custom designing a special Fuel Safe gas cell for race offering a mix of "show & go" most people dream of. These same guys also developed and built the one-of-a-kind Lambo-style door hinges which allow the doors shoot straight up at a 90 degree angle, and make the car look like it’s ready to fly.

This vehicle has it all with 19 X 7-1/2 Hex-1 three-piece rims from R-1 Racing Wheels sported with Toyo Proxes T1 racing tires, 12-inch slotted rotors with four-piston caliper to include chrome undercarriage parts from General Motors to finish it off as one of the leading sport compact cars on the scene today. The finishing touch is provided by Meguiar’s new NXT Generation polishes to keep the Evil Z24 looking its award winning best, show after show.

Is this the car that will set the Chevrolet badge apart from its Daewoo predecessor? The new Matiz keeps its city-friendly dimensions and perky styling, but along with the unfamiliar name, it benefits from a whole host of welcome changes that enhance versatility, fuel economy and refinement.

Chevrolet's extensive makeover has given the Matiz a new lease of life. It's now far more refined, frugal, better to drive and comes with extra kit. But the little Chevy is facing seriously stiff competition from the new Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo city cars. They may cost more, at £6,500, but the Matiz will struggle to match their image.

Is this the car that will set the Chevrolet badge apart from its Daewoo predecessor? The new Matiz keeps its city-friendly dimensions and perky styling, but along with the unfamiliar name, it benefits from a whole host of welcome changes that enhance versatility, fuel economy and refinement.

The Giugiaro-penned lines of the original Matiz have been freshened up with sharp-edged new headlamps, a lower front grille and bold round tail-lights. It may lack the cute looks that made the original such a big hit, but the car is certainly distinctive.

Much of the restyled metal is new, too - around 40 per cent of the Matiz's panels are made from lighter high-strength steel, lowering kerbweight by more than 100kg to 727kg.

This, along with revisions to both the 796cc and 1.0-litre engines, has seen a dramatic improvement in fuel returns. Economy on the smaller unit is up from 46.3 to 54.3mpg, while on the larger motor it climbs from 44.1 to 50.4mpg.

Both powerplants now comply with Euro IV emissions regulations, and the engineers have worked hard on refinement. The Matiz is now far quieter on the move thanks to better insulation. Only a background engine hum penetrates the cabin, and there's little road and wind noise at motorway speeds.

With only 66bhp and 91Nm of torque available, though, performance in the 1.0-litre version we drove is best described as relaxed. The car has to be pushed to make decent progress.

Grip levels are low, which is hardly a surprise given the Chevy's tiny, skinny- profile tyres, and understeer sets in early through tighter corners. And while the light steering is ideal in town, its lack of feedback becomes obvious at speed. Thankfully, the long-throw gearchange is direct and the brakes feel strong.

The ride is now smoother at lower speeds, too, further improving comfort for occupants. What's more, the driving position is fine with good visibility, and although it takes time to grow used to the central dash-top dials, they are clear and simple. The seats are comfortable, while there's decent room for four.

A less intrusive rear suspension set-up means boot space is increased from 104 to 170 litres. Remove the back headrests and the split rear bench flips forward, boosting the capacity to 845 litres. Standard kit should include twin front airbags, a CD player and ABS.

When the Matiz goes on sale in June there will be three trims - S, SE and SX - and prices aren't expected to be much higher than those of the current range. That means the base 796cc S will cost around £6,000, with the flagship 1.0-litre SX at about £8,000.
