Oh yes, one of our attractions about this car is the hybrid system that is installed.
According to Toyota, the All New Yaris Cross uses parallel hybrid technology whose function is to make fuel very efficient.
Toyota claims that this car is capable of recording fuel consumption figures of 1:30 km/liter.
Moreover, Toyota also said that the All New Yaris Cross launched in Indonesia is different from the Japanese and European versions.
For the European market, the engine is coded M15A-FKS for the non-hybrid version and M15A-FXS for the hybrid version.
Meanwhile, those in Indonesia get a machine coded 2NR-VE which is certainly familiar here.
Before starting the trip, we set up our driving position in the After Seven parking area where the trip started.
Here we adjust the seats which are equipped with electrical adjustments.
The steering wheel can also be adjusted tilt and telescopic to make it easier to get the ideal driving position.
The mirror movement settings can also be adjusted electrically, even to fold.
The center rearview also provides good visibility to the rear.
Moreover, the rear window is the right size, not too big or too small, which will make it easier for the driver to see the center mirror.
The design of the dashboard is designed to be driver oriented, making it easier for the driver to manage while driving.
Even the head unit is deliberately pointed towards the driver for easy access.
The All New Yaris Cross that we tried is the S HV type which is sold for IDR 440.6 million
Like other electrified vehicles, this car has a quiet sound when turned on.
When we started the car, there was no sound of any engine.
This is because the machine will turn on electric mode first before use.
Furthermore, when the car exceeds a speed of more than 40 km/hour, the engine will automatically switch to petrol.
Similar to the one on the Kijang Innova Zenix Hybrid which we tried previously.
Once we stepped on the gas pedal, we felt a fairly good quiet sound from this car.
If the battery feels like it is about to run out, the power supply generator will turn on.
If it is on, the sound is quite audible, although not too loud, accompanied by minimal vibration.
However, we feel that this is still quite reasonable for a hybrid vehicle. As an illustration, the test drive session provided by PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) is very short, only 50 minutes.
This means that we cannot explore this car in more depth.
In Standard mode the engine performance feels smooth and linear.
It feels like this car is very suitable for use on typical traffic jams and stop and go roads like in Jakarta.
One thing we like about this car is the braking.
The brakes on the All New Yaris Cross feel responsive and smooth when pressed.
The character is similar to the brakes on European cars which are a bit deep, but feel right.
On paper, this machine has an engine capacity of 1,496 cc, 4 cylinders, DOHC, with Dual VVT-i.
The power produced reaches 104.6 hp @ 6,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 138 Nm @ 4,200 rpm.
This power is channeled to the front wheels using a CVT automatic transmission.
Interestingly, Toyota provides driving modes such as Standard, PWR (power), and ECO which can be selected via the Drive button on the right side of the steering wheel.
When we switched it to PWR mode, the car's power felt fiercer.
The character is not immediately striking, but you can feel that the performance is more powerful.
In ECO mode, the power output will certainly be slower because the ECU limits the engine to produce the best performance.
This mode is very suitable for use in traffic jams to save fuel.
When driven from 40 km/h to 100 km/h the roar of the engine sounds quite loud.
Unfortunately, the roads around ICE BSD were busy this afternoon, we didn't want to endanger other people just to satisfy our egos and chose to drive casually.
Even though we didn't do much maneuvering on the roads in BSD, we are sure this car has capable handling.
The steering wheel feels light when maneuvering at low speeds.
The suspension is also quite soft.
We also like the suspension character provided by the All New Yaris Cross.
This can be seen when we pass through the curly roads and speed bumps in the BSD area.
When the car goes over a speed bump, the suspension dampens quite well and feels soft.
We suspect that this soft effect is produced by the slightly smaller tire profile, 215/55 R18.
Meanwhile, the type below uses R17 rims wrapped in 215/60 tires.
Unfortunately, when passing a speed bump at a fairly high speed, the car feels uncomfortable and tends to make a 'banging' sound.
Oh yes, the platform used on the All New Yaris Cross uses DNGA.
This platform is the same as that used on Raize and Veloz.
In our opinion, there are 3 points that Toyota should improve.
The first is about the refinement given to the All New Yaris Cross.
In our opinion, this car will feel comfortable when driven relaxed and a bit fast.
We hope that Toyota can provide a more refined suspension character, considering the selling price is over IDR 400 million.
The second point of course is the cabin's tightness, which is expected to be better.
Hopefully in the future the All New Yaris Cross can be more tight, okay?
The third point, of course, is the panoramic roof.
Understandably, this is related to the character of Indonesian people who sometimes prefer roofs that can be opened (sunroofs) rather than just being able to open and close the curtains.
